What Sandown Races
Where Sandown Racecourse – 591-659 Princes Hwy, Springvale VIC 3171
When Wednesday, March 29, 2023
First Race 2:30pm AEDT

The Melbourne Racing Club will host another twilight race meeting on Sandown’s Hillside track this Wednesday, with an eight-race program to be run. The track is currently rated a Good 4; however, there is a fair amount of rain forecast to fall across Monday and Tuesday afternoon, so we could be racing on a Soft track. The rail will be pushed out another 3m to the +6m position for the entire circuit, with racing set to kick off at 2:30pm AEDT.

Best Bet at Sandown: Loco

Loco, another of Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr’s smart three-year-olds, made his debut earlier this month when he faced the starter for the first time at Pakenham on March 3, where he obliterated his rivals over 1600m. This son of So You Think settled in the last two or three before making his move on the outside of the field and letting down with a blistering turn of foot. This gelding improved his position from third-last to first between the 400m and 300m marks, with his final 400m and 200m ranked as the second and fastest at the Pakenham meeting, respectively. His chances this Wednesday will only improve with the addition of Mark Zahra, and if he gets even luck from barrier one, he looks extremely difficult to beat.

Next Best at Sandown: Vittoriosa

Vittoriosa, trained by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, will look to make it back-to-back wins on Wednesday when she competes in the Benchmark 64 Handicap at Sandown after winning her first race of the preparation at Pakenham over 1600m on March 16. This five-year-old mare finally broke through for her first win since September 23 of 2021, beating a small field of fillies and mares by a massive five lengths after failing on two wet tracks in Sydney when first- and second-up this time in. This daughter of Vancouver showed last start that she may be regaining the form she showed in her three-year-old preparation in Sydney, where she won two races and finished second twice. Jordan Childs has retained the seat after riding this mare in her last two starts at Pakenham, and we should see Childs push forward and take the lead from barrier eight. There appear to be only two other speed influences in the race, and with Vittoriosa’s early speed, she should be able to hold them off and run the race to her liking.

Best Value at Sandown: Staunch

The sixth race of the day will be a Benchmark 70 Handicap for colts, geldings, and entires, in which the Matt Laurie-trained Staunch will be returning from a four-month spell with the benefit of one trial, which he won, at Stony Creek over 930m on March 15. This four-year-old gelding has only finished outside the placings once in six starts, with his most recent runner-up finish behind Brayden Star being one of his better efforts last preparation. The son of Flying Artie settled behind the two leaders who set a fast pace at Cranbourne on November 12, and despite the fact that the winner ran straight past him, this gelding boxed on very well to finish second – a length behind the winner. Ben Melham is expected to push out of barrier 15 on Wednesday and compete for the lead. If Melham can get Staunch to settle outside or just behind the leaders, he should give us a good run for our money down the home straight.
