Republican party fresh up and “can win”

By Michael Guerin Republican Party’s poor draw in his Addington comeback race tonight comes with a saver. Because co-trainer Cran Dalgety is confident the horse his rising three-year-old star has to beat in his R60-70 pace tonight Samhara is just as poorly off. Republican Party was one of our best two-year-olds in the second half of last season, finishing third to Franco Indie in the three-year-old race on Cup Day before picking up two relatively easy summer kills then heading for a spell. The Dalgetys put him aside and Cran…

By Joshua Smith, Harness News Desk Alicia Harrison enjoyed being back doing what she loves at Cambridge Raceway on Thursday – driving winners. The local horsewoman was involved in a horrific car accident in January when she was on her way to the Karaka Million race meeting at Ellerslie, which left her bed-ridden for several weeks after suffering a broken sternum and ankle. “It was extremely scary,” Harrison said. “We were driving up to the Karaka Million and there was a guy in a ute on the wrong side of…

Sundees Son the one to beat in tonight’s National Trot

By Michael Guerin Driver John Dunn admits the gap between Sundees Son and his two young gun rivals is closing. But whether it has closed enough to see him beaten in tonight’s $100,000 Peter Breckon Memorial National Trot at Alexandra Park is the question. Nobody doubts Sundees Son is the best trotter in Australasia, especially over longer trips, but he has been beaten in his last two Alexandra Park starts by first Bolt For Brilliance and then last week Muscle Mountain when they have settled in front of him. It…

Self Assured big shortener for tonight’s Messenger

The glamour pacer has been backed off the board to win tonight’s Group 1 and cap a remarkable month in which he has already won the inaugural running of The Race at Cambridge then finished a booming third to stablemate Spankem in the Taylor Mile last Friday. In both those races he started from barrier 8 over the sprint trips…

Enjoying steps up for Queen Mother Memorial Cup

Enjoying (No. 4) lands his first win in Hong Kong. Enjoying’s career in Hong Kong hasn’t been straightforward but trainer Chris So is optimistic the Dundeel gelding can expel stamina queries and requite his owners with victory in the Group 3 Queen Mother Memorial Cup Handicap (2400m) at Sha Tin on Sunday (May 1). “It’s a small field and I think he can manage the distance, for sure, I’m not worried because even the owner Mr Wong believes he can go further but in Hong Kong there’s not much on…

Handicapping changes announced

The New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Handicapping Review Committee has made a number of recommendations following their recent meeting. The Committee regularly reviews current policies, following consultation and taking into consideration input from participants.  This included those opinions and suggestions offered at Roadshows held with trainers earlier in the year. The objectives of any changes are to increase horse participation and longevity; to create programming opportunities; to maintain healthy field sizes; and to encourage wagering in a competitive environment. In addition to these changes, NZTR said they will also investigate programming…
