What Warrnambool Races
Where Warrnambool Racing Club – 2-64 Grafton Rd, Warrnambool VIC 3280
When Tuesday, August 23, 2022
First Race 1pm AEST

Warrnambool is the scene for Tuesday racing in Victoria, with eight races set down for judgement on a track rated a Heavy 10. With the rail out 7m for the entire circuit, and given the testing conditions underfoot, it may pay dividends to follow those runners coming to this meeting with race fitness under their belts. We kick off the day’s action at 1pm AEST.

Best Bet at Warrnambool – O’reilly Mcluke

We were with the Symon Wilde-trained O’reilly McLuke at Coleraine on August 2, where he looked to have the race shot to pieces before finding one better inside the final furlong. The six-year-old gelding has two runner-up performances from his last three starts and has shown he is more than capable of handling rain-affected tracks. With speed drawn underneath him, the Coats Choice gelding looks set to gain the perfect run in transit, in the one-one. Despite having two wins and nine placings from 19 starts, this bloke rarely puts in a poor performance, and with race fitness on his side and a decent run of form behind him, this race looks perfectly set-up for O’reilly Mcluke. The $2.30 quote at PlayUp may be a little tight for some, but it is one we are willing to load into.

Next Best at Warrnambool – Catskill Mountain

The Andrew Bobbin-trained Catskill Mountain has put together a nice enough campaign so far with a win and three minor placings from five starts. The five-year-old gelding looks well placed having finished second in a much harder race than this at Echuca on July 29. The son of Rip Van Winkle made up plenty of ground when chasing home Pres De Toi last time out on a Soft 7. This will be just his second go on Heavy ground, but considering he is arguably in career-best form, we expect him to handle what is in front of him. The in-form Blaike McDougall sticks on board, which is a massive bonus. Hauling 62.5kg from barrier one is a concern, but Catskill Mountain has the best finishing sprint in the race – so if he can get off the rail at the right time, he should ultimately prove too good for this lot.

Best Value at Warrnambool – Bellini Miss

Lindsey Smith and Jarrod Fry are set to combine once again, this time with Bellini Miss in the opening leg of the Warrnambool quaddie. The four-year-old mare returns from a near five-month spell, and despite the testing conditions she faces here first-up, she looks to be the one with most upside in a race like this. She broke her maiden here at Warrnambool last campaign when beating home Defining, who would subsequently go on to be the best of the beaten bunch behind Golden Eagle favourite Illation in the Nitschke Stakes during the Adelaide Autumn Carnival. That form line stands up much the better than anything her rivals bring. She is a genuine backmarker, but with plenty of early speed engaged in the race, Bellini Miss looks to be the one who will have the last shot at some potentially vulnerable leaders in this 1200m event.

Best Value

Race 5 – Silk #5 Bellini Miss (5)

4yo Mare | T: Lindsey Smith | J: Jarrod Fry (56.5kg)
