Tommy’s Topgun Trial

By order of the Peaky Blinders, or WA trainer Steve Withers, Tommy Shelby has hit Victorian soil and has earnt a rug in the invitational TAB Topgun field.

The $150,000 to-the-winner Group 1 over 525m will be run at The Meadows on Saturday 7 November and is a part of the Metro Festival of Racing, which kicks off with the Hume Cup on Monday night.

The box draw for the TAB Topgun field will be conducted on Monday night at The Meadows.

The WA sensation, who is named after the leading character in the popular Netflix series, Peaky Blinders, arrived in the care of Pearcedale trainer Kel Greenough last week and had his first look at The Meadows on Monday, reeling off sections of 5.17sec, 17.92sec and an overall time of 30.06sec. His run-home time was 12.14sec.

“He trialed really good this week and ran the best of the day clearly,” Greenough said.

“(A greyhound’s) first look at The Meadows is a bit tricky, but I feel he would improve a fair bit from that. It was also extremely windy on Monday and I feel the wind would have been a big part of slowing the dog down.”

Tommy Shelby’s first Victorian campaign is also likely to incorporate a crack at the TAB Melbourne Cup series after earning a start in a heat at Sandown Park on 20 November after winning the WA State Sprint Final.
The son of Fernando Bale and Serena Fly High finished third in last month’s Million Dollar Chase Final at Wentworth Park after recording the fastest qualifying time at Wentworth Park (29.58sec).
