What Mooloolaba Cup Day
Where Sunshine Coast Turf Club – 170 Pierce Ave, Caloundra QLD 4551
When Saturday, November 19, 2022
First Race 12:03pm AEST

Saturday metropolitan racing will be at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club for the first time in the 2022/23 season, highlighted by the $150,000 Mooloolaba Cup. The track is currently rated as a Good 4, and with perfect weather on the forecast for Friday and Saturday, we expect to stay in the Good range all day on raceday. The rail will be in the true position for the entire circuit, and racing gets underway at 12:03pm AEST.

Mooloolaba Cup Tip: Linthorpe Lad

In the feature event of the day, we will be siding with the inform gelding and current race favourite, Linthorpe Lad for the Kevin Kemp yard, who is gunning for three wins in a row. This five-year-old gelding has won his last two starts over 1600m at Doomben and Eagle Farm, while at his other two starts this preparation he has run two placings. This son of Mahisara has been in great form this time in, and we don’t expect that run of form to end on Saturday. Larry Cassidy will stick with this guy for the fifth time in as many starts, as he looks to build a very good relationship with this talented galloper. The only negative on Saturday is that he has drawn barrier 12 of 12, but if he can jump with them and slot in just better than midfield, he will be very hard to beat once again.

Sunshine Coast Best Bet: Je Suis Belle

Our best bet of the day will come up in race seven over 1000m, where the Mark Currie-trained Je Suis Belle look very hard to beat after an impressive return from a six-month spell. First-up over 1000m at Eagle Farm this six-year-old mare sat at the back of the field and ran on strong only to go down by a head on the line to Simply Fly, who had the tactical advantage of being a pair further forward in the running. This daughter of Bel Esprit has an outstanding career record, only missing the placings once in her career to go along with eight wins from her 18 starts. Ryan Maloney will take the ride on this girl for the first time and from barrier four he should be able to hold a position one horse off the rail and settle in the first half of the field. With even luck, this girl should be recording ninth win for her career on Saturday.

Sunshine Coast Next Best Bet: Logan Street Lion

In the Benchmark 85 over 1400m, the Chris Waller-trained Logan Street Lion looks to have gone to a new level since making the move from Victoria to Queensland, after his impressive first-up victory at Eagle Farm on November 1. This son of Tavistock will be stepping up to Benchmark 85 grade for the first time in his career but considering his form in Melbourne and the ease in which he won last start, the step up in grade looks to be warranted. Jim Byrne will take the ride on Saturday after trialling him before his first-up run, another positive to add to this five-year-old geldings case. Of his eight career starts, seven of them have been at the 1400m, where he has won four and finished in the placings twice. This race should set up nicely for him as there is a lot of speed and he should be able to settle in the first five or six runners and look to finish strong down the outside in the concluding stages.

Best Value at Sunshine Coast: Better Get Set

In the final race of the day, Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoystead will bring their five-year-old mare, Better Get Set, to a very winnable race over 1200m as she comes in after, what could be, a confidence building win for this luckless mare. This daughter of Better Than Ready has only won four of her 21 career starts, while she has run second or third, nine times. From barrier nine, Ben Thompson will have to take his medicine and drop out to the back of the field, which could suit a mare with her type of racing style. Thompson should be looking to find the outside on the home bend and push the button at the 300m mark, giving this girl every chance to record back-to-back wins.
