First Race 11:28am AEST

Queensland racing returns to headquarters on Saturday for nine races at Eagle Farm. The Brisbane weather has turned it on for Show Week, so we should be racing on a Good 4 track on Saturday, while the rail is out 5.5m the entire way. It is a very competitive card with even racing right across the afternoon, and – as always – we will be doing our best to find you some Saturday winners.

Best Bet at Eagle Farm – Ice In Vancouver

We are going to take the short way home early on in the day, with Ice In Vancouver looking to make it four-straight wins. The Cody Morgan-trained five-year-old gelding has been terrific winning at Gunnedah and Grafton this preparation, while he ended his last campaign with a comfortable win in the Tamworth Newmarket. While his two wins this prep have been in country New South Wales, they have been in Showcase races, so the fields he has been beating have been quality. The son of Vancouver has won six of his 11 starts, with three of those on firm tracks, so he should love Eagle Farm, while barrier seven and the low weight of 52kg under Angela Jones is going to see him set the turf alight. He’s the one they have to beat.

Next Best at Eagle Farm – Hard To Say

Hard To Say hasn’t been at the races for a little while, but we do have a bit of time for him. Trained by Jason Deamer, the three-year-old colt resumes from a 32-week spell in what is a very winnable 3YO Handicap over 1000m. The son of Exceed And Excel ran fourth on debut in the Breeders’ Plate at Randwick behind Sejardan, and in his third start, he just missed at this track and distance behind Palazzo Spirit in the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes. Hard To Say was a dominant trial winner at Newcastle on June 15 and then he was only narrowly beaten in a Wyong trial later that month by Florida Sky who ran well first-up. With Kyle Wilson-Taylor in the saddle from barrier three, Hard To Say should get the right run in transit and get his maiden out of the way.

Best Value at Eagle Farm – Honorable Spirit

It’s a rare sort of day where the online bookmakers seemed to have priced most horses correctly, so big value is hard to come by. In the staying race of the afternoon, we can get each-way odds about John Smerdon’s Honorable Spirit, who seems to have found his form. This time last year, the son of Charm Spirit was winning races for fun, but he seemed to have strayed off that path in 2022. After running fourth in the Listed Grafton Cup two starts ago, the six-year-old backed it up with a good third under the big weight of 61kg at this track on July 30 behind Contrition. He drops from 61kg to 54kg on Saturday and gets Mark Du Plessis in the saddle for just the second time in his career. He will relish the 2200m on the firm surface and he should be strong late.
