Local stayer blossoms in Victoria Cup

Hallam greyhound trainer George Miltos was “tickled pink” after his seasoned stayer Floral Lace pulled off an unlikely victory in the Backmans Greyhound Supplies Victoria Cup on last Saturday’s Cranbourne Cup night.

Run over the testing 699 metre distance and carrying a first prize of $7,500, the Victoria Cup is one of the most prestigious races on the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club calendar.

A relative lightweight at just 26.5 kilograms, Floral Lace produced a spectacular come-from-behind performance to win the race at the huge odds of $29.50.

“She has always had the ability (to win a race like this) but never got a lot of luck,” said Miltos, who lives just 15 minutes from the Cranbourne track.

“She is always a little slow early but she runs home real strong.”

It was her ninth victory from 64 starts, and saw her career earnings soar to $64,000.

Floral Lace will now be set for heats of the $105,000 Group 1 Bold Trease (715m) at Sandown Park on 19 November, with the final to be held on TAB Melbourne Cup night, Friday 26 November.
