First Race 12:14pm AEST

It is Kalgoorlie Cup Day on Sunday afternoon where a nine-race program is scheduled for the club’s marquee day of the year. Having raced on Thursday afternoon, the track will be on the quick back-up by based on the way it played on Thursday, a bit of love and care in the lead up to Saturday’s meeting and the track should still present perfectly for Cup Day.

The track is rated a Good 4, with the rail in the true position throughout, with racing set to get underway at 12:14pm AWST.

Kalgoorlie Cup Top Tip: Stafford’s Lad

The Listed Kalgoorlie Cup (2200m) headlines the action on Saturday afternoon, and we anticipate the Dan Morton-trained Stafford’s Lad will walk with the main portion of the $150,000 on offer. The eight-year-old gelding put in a perfect Cup trial in his Listed Boulder Cup triumph when gaining a perfect run in transit and grinding his way to victory in the home straight to arrive in time. This race is certainly no harder but does go up 1.5kg on his last start win. From barrier 10 under Shaun O’Donnell, we expect to see this son of Demerit to be settled towards the rear of field. If he can gain a nice tow into the race, Stafford’s Lad has shown he can sustain a long run throughout his career and considering he is a $7.50 chance with online bookmakers, he looks to be a nice bet in the Kalgoorlie Cup.

Kalgoorlie Best Bet: Excellent Dream

Our best bet of the day comes up in the opening leg of the quaddie when the Luke Fernie-trained Excellent Dream looks to build on his impressive first-up effort at Belmont. The six-year-old gelding managed hit the line strongly over 1200m in the Nicopolis Stakes and was only lipped out by Comes A Time. He looks perfectly placed as by Fernie as he steps up to 1300m for the first time in his career and from barrier three draws to gain a gun run in transit under Holly Watson. The Dream Ahead gelding will need a touch of luck on the home turn, but if he gains clear air at the right time, Excellent Dream looks to have a fair bit on his rivals and looks a clear best bet of the day.

Best Value at Kalgoorlie: Makfly

Helen Hardy sends her seven-year-old gelding Makfly to the Kalgoorlie 1760m and will be looking to go one better than what he did at this track and trip on September 18. The Makfi gelding was forced to make a mid-race move which almost paid off but was ultimately found wanting inside the final furlong and subsequently went down by under two-lengths to Magic Will Reign. He gets a weight advantage on his rival when they meet again on Saturday and from barrier eight, we anticipate Laqdar Ramoly will have him settled outside the leader throughout and give his rivals something to gun down in the home straight. The $16 with some online betting sites looks to be the wrong price about Makfly.
