Ipswich racing preview

What Ipswich Races
Where Ipswich Turf Club – 219 Brisbane Rd, Bundamba QLD 4304
When Monday, May 1, 2023
First Race 12:22pm AEST

The Ipswich Turf Club will host a very competitive eight-race card out of Ipswich Racecourse this Labour Day Monday. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, however, there is no rain on the forecast for the area on Sunday and Monday, so we expect to begin and stay on a Good surface for the entire program. After racing on the track on Friday afternoon with the rail in the +7m position, the rail will go back into the True position for the entire circuit and allow the track to play as fair as possible.

The first race at Ipswich will jump at 12:22pm AEST.

Best Bet at Ipswich: Green Reign

Our best bet of the day will come up in the second leg of the quaddie, where the Matthew Dunn-trained Green Reign will be dropping back in grade from a Benchmark 75 Handicap first-up last start to a Benchmark 65 Handicap second-up on Monday. This seasoned seven-year-old gelding was very good when he finished third at Doomben when fresh over 1200m, making up over six lengths in the final 400m to only finish 2.3 lengths off the winner in fourth place on April 8. This son of Lope De Vega has only raced at Ipswich twice but he has never finished outside the top two, with his only start at this track and trip resulting in a second-place finish in October of last year. Although this gelding has only won three times from 33 starts, he looks to get his best chance to a win a race in a very long time, as he has been racing much stronger races at her last few starts. Ashley Morgan rode Green Reign last start, and he has chosen to stick, which indicates to us that he is going very well this time in and should go very close on Monday.

Best Bet

Race 6 – Silks#3 Green Reign (14)

Next Best at Ipswich: Hakkai Maru

The final race of the day will feature another of our better bets on the card, as Louise White brings her four-year-old mare Hakkai Maru back to Ipswich where she will be looking to keep her unbeaten record at the track intact. This daughter of Maurice has been to the Ipswich 1200m once before, where she recorded a dominant 2.3 length victory after leading throughout and kicking clear in the home straight to win easily in a Filles & Mares Class 2 Handicap in August last year. This mare is coming through a strong Class 4 Handicap at Doomben last start, where the winner has risen in class and won again on Saturday at Eagle Farm, which shows that the form out that race is strong. Boris Thornton will have to get this girl to jump well and use that customary early speed from the sticky barrier (12 of 12) to cross the rest of the field and settle outside the likely leader in Rose Of Shiraz. If Thornton doesn’t have to do too much work and can settle Hakkai Maru in the first three or four runners, she should prove too good in the final 300m of the race.

Next Best

Race 8 – Silks#4 Hakkai Maru (12)

4yo Mare | T: Louise White | J: Boris Thornton (58.5kg)

Best Value at Ipswich: Rangatira

Chris Waller will send his three-year-old gelding Rangatira back to Ipswich in the hopes of getting a better run in transit and breaking his maiden at career start number three, after finishing fourth over 1200m here last time. Last start, this son of I Am Invincible over raced when he settled at the back of the field before making up ground on the inside to pick off the majority of the field in the final 400m. This gelding has appeared to want further than 1110m and 1200m in both of his starts to date, so we expect him to perform much better now that he gets 1350m on Monday. James Orman will ride Rangatira for the first time, and if he can get him closer from barrier four, we should see the best of him over a much more suitable distance third-up.

Best Value

Race 6 – Silks#5 Rangatira (9)

3yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: James Orman (58kg)
