Flashback: Bendigo Great Chase

The Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association is a pillar of its local community, with charity and community engagement events happening across the entire year.

The Bendigo leg of the TAB Great Chase is one event on the calendar that nearly 100 community group members did not miss in 2019.

Kalianna Specialist School has been coming to the Great Chase for many years and the staff and students wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Josh, from Kalianna School, has been attending with his students for upwards of 10 years, and said the Great Chase means so much to the kids.

“They get showbags to take home, and we use this as a bonding experience for our students and parents,” he said.

Vahland Complex staff member Geoff brought down 12 people to experience the thrill of the races once again.

“This is the sixth year we’ve attended the Great Chase. We come back for the community aspect of the days. We see past patients and residents there and get to catch up with them,” Geoff said.

The group from Scope Weerona Avenue were the biggest winners on the day, walking away with $1,200 in 2019 after being randomly matched to greyhounds successful on the racetrack on the day.

Alannah, from Scope, said the money will go towards “social outings and community events for the clients.”

The TAB Great Chase is Victorian greyhound racing’s number one community event, distributing almost $650,000 to the disability sector since 2003.
