Feature Race Race 8: Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m)
First Race 11:48am AEST

The first Group 1 of the Brisbane Winter Carnival will be run and won on Saturday, and while its name is the Doomben 10,000, the meeting will be held at Eagle Farm due to the state of the track. Nine very good races will be held, including two Listed races, two Group 3 events, one Group 2 and the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m). Despite Doomben being washed out, Eagle Farm remains relatively dry, with the current track rating only a Soft 6, while the rail is out 7m for the entire course.

Read on for HorseBetting’s race-by-race preview, best bets and quaddie tips for Doomben 10,000 Day at Eagle Farm.

Race 1: Class 6 Plate (1000m)

What a way to start! There’s no better way to get the blood pumping on a Group 1 raceday than with a Class 6 Plate over the short course. BOOMNOVA was good first-up at this track and distance when a gritty winner albeit on a Wednesday, but her trainer Chris Munce was adamant that she wasn’t ready to win on that day, thinking she needed the run. Now second-up and dropping 2.5kg in weight, the speedy four-year-old looks well-placed to make it back-to-back wins to kick off the campaign. Samantha Collett will do the riding from barrier seven, which should see the grey mare end up in the first couple of horses in the run. Her form at the end of last prep – which included a second on Magic Millions Day – should be good enough to see her competitive in the opener.

Race 2: Listed Members’ Handicap (1600m)

The first Listed race of the afternoon will be run and won at 12:23pm, with the running of the Members’ Handicap over the mile. Although this is a big step up in grade for the in-form BULLFINCH, his love affair with Eagle Farm could be enough to see him make it three wins at the track from his past four outings. The Chris Waller-trained five-year-old won well on April 2 over 1400m, before finishing third in a three-way photo finish on April 16 over 1500m, and then dropping back to 1400m and winning comfortably on April 30 in a Class 6. The son of Kodiac has to now do it over 1600m and in Listed company, but he gets in on the minimum weight of 54kg and gains the services of William Pike. He will be winding up late.

Race 3: Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2143m)

Group racing gets underway in the third race of the afternoon, and once again the silks that Bullfinch will hopefully wear to victory in race two can come to the fore in race three. YONKERS is just the class horse of this field, coming out of runs behind Cascadian, Duais and Polly Grey in Melbourne and Sydney. The six-year-old could barely pick his feet up in the Neville Selwood Stakes on March 22 in his previous outing when sixth behind Mount Popa and Polly Grey, but he now finds himself on a drier surface at Eagle Farm against a couple of horses who aren’t up to his class. Nash Rawiller is a good strong rider, so we can rest assured that he will get the best out of the Waller-trained commodity, while barrier 10 will allow the horse to get across towards the front on his own accord. He can make it win number 10.

Race 4: 3YO Plate (1400m)

Although this 3YO Plate doesn’t hold any black-type status, it is a star-studded field of three-year-olds. Despite it being ultra-competitive, we thought that the Rob Heathcote-trained STARTANTES was as close to a good thing that you will see on a racetrack on Saturday. Having gone up close to $4 when markets opened on Wednesday afternoon, savvy shoppers grabbed hold and saw her price plummet into $3 now with online bookmakers. That still is a great price when you consider her form. Three starts ago she was very good when sixth to Fangirl and Espiona in the Surround Stakes, before running a narrow second to Hinged at Group 1 level over 1400m. Since returning to Queensland, the classy filly ran an eye-catching fourth behind Count De Rupee in the Victory Stakes, and that horse is the second favourite for the afternoon’s Group 1 sprint. Now back up to 1400m at Eagle Farm at set weights, she could blow this field away. She’s a serious horse, and they will know she’s here.

Race 5: Group 2 Spirit Of Boom Classic (1200m)

Some very good horses have won the Spirit Of Boom Classic in years gone by, including the likes of Gold Edition, Brazen Beau, Winning Rupert and more recently, Rothfire and Prince Of Boom – so who will add their name to the elusive honour roll on Saturday? Tom Button’s JEMELDI has been very good in his career so far, winning two of his four starts, and running third in Group 2 company in Sydney. The two-year-old gelding was forced to go back from a wide gate first-up over 1000m in the Dalrello Stakes here at Eagle Farm, but he made up some great ground late to run seventh, just four lengths off Exo Lady. Now out to 1200m and having finally drawn a good alley in gate three, Brad Stewart can ride the horse on pace and give him every chance of returning to the winner’s stall. It will take a proper two-year-old to beat him on Saturday.

Race 6: Listed Bright Shadow (1200m)

This is a lottery! A capacity field of 16 mares will face the starter in the Listed Bright Shadow over six furlongs, and in all honesty, we don’t know which way to look. The top weight in BABYLON BERLIN brings across some very good New Zealand form, having missed the placings only once in her 15-start career. In her most recent outing, she was a close second to Sword Of State in a Group 3, while before that she mixed form with Entriviere and Levante, placing third behind the former in the Group 1 Railway Stakes. That looks the right form to bring across, while she also gets the services of James McDonald on Saturday. The Tony Pike-trained four-year-old does have to give a fair amount of weight to the rest of these, but her form is superior.

Race 7: Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2143m)

A spot in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) is on offer in Saturday’s Rough Habit Plate, with a full field of three-year-old colts and geldings assembled for the staying event. Again, we are siding with the Kiwis, this time with PINARELLO, who is likely to be the one to beat in the Derby also. The Roger James & Robert Wellwood-trained son of Tavistock is simply bred to stay, being out of Zabeel mare Zonza, who won a Group 3 at Caulfield in 2013. Pinarello ran fifth in the New Zealand Derby (2400m) in March, before coming out of the Group 1 run to trounce his rivals in the Group 2 Trelawney Stud Champion Stakes over 2100m on April 23. He gets the conditions to suit on Saturday.

Race 8: Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m)

The Doomben 10,000 is the first Group 1 event of the Brisbane Winter Carnival, with a very quality field having been assembled for the $1 million event. Mazu looks to extend his winning streak to six, while Count De Rupee and Kementari are trying to make it back-to-back wins. Read our full runner-by-runner preview of the Doomben 10,000 and see who our betting experts are spending $100 on.

Race 9: Benchmark 85 Handicap (1400m)

We round out the afternoon with a wide-open betting affair, as a full field of 16 do battle over 1400m. Despite being a bit of an enigma PALLADAS is the one they have to beat here, as he is now second-up and out to 1400m. The Tony Gollan-trained four-year-old has drawn brilliantly in barrier five, while he will also get the services of senior hoop Jim Byrne, who has had some success on the son of I Am Invincible in the past. While he would have been better suited at Doomben, the wet tracks are not his go, so Eagle Farm’s better ground will certainly do. He can be storming home late to get punters out in the last.
