Baker’s War Eternal up for the battle

Warwick Farm-based trainer Bjorn Baker has continued his rich vein of form unveiling a promising two-year-old with War Eternal (NZ) (Pierro) proving to be too strong over the 1400m at Randwick.

The Pierro two-year-old managed to get his head down on the line in blustery conditions, running down Revivalist by a short head with Honeycreeper a further length away in third.

The Baker camp has now posted a remarkable 16 winners from their past 50 runners including one down south at Caulfield with quality sprinter Malkovich.

Baker was full of praise for War Eternal, who may have avoided the ultimate gear change in the process.

“I like him,” Baker said.

“Funnily enough we were going to geld him at the end of last prep but (the owners) said ‘look, just give him one more chance as a colt’.

“He’s relaxed well and any two-year-old that can win at Randwick has a big future going forward.”

Jockey Kerrin Mcevoy also sees plenty of improvement for a galloper who was only having his third venture to the races.

It was a heady ride by the Melbourne Cup winning hoop as he navigated the tricky gusty conditions on the Heavy 8 surface.

“It was quite windy out there especially along the side when galloping into it,” McEvoy said.

“It was a steadily run race and we took a bit of organising getting into the clear, but I like the way he rallied the last five or six hops.

“He was strong through the last bit, and I think there’s a bit more to come once he really works out what it’s all about.”

Bred by Cambridge Stud principal’s Brendan and Jo Lindsay War Eternal was purchased by Baker out their 2020 Karaka Book 1 draft for $160,000.
