What Bairnsdale Races
Where Bairnsdale Racing Club – Racecourse Rd, Bairnsdale VIC 3875
When Tuesday, July 26, 2022
First Race 1pm AEST

Racing returns to Bairnsdale for the first time in a couple of months for an eight-race meeting on Tuesday afternoon. With the track rated a Soft 7 and the rail in the true position, we anticipate it will be favourable to be up on speed throughout the day. The first race is set to go at 1pm AEST.

Best Bet at Bairnsdale – Hurley’s Hero

The Allan & Jason Williams-trained Hurley’s Hero was done on the line by a rock-hard fit jumper at Sale over 2247m on July 8, but we expect Tuesday will be the day he breaks through at start five. The three-year-old gelding was forced to work inside the first 800m to get up to the front of the field, which arguably saw him peak on his run inside the final 50m. He gets the blinkers off for this, and despite drawing barrier 11, he has the early speed to overcome the tricky draw and should gain an uncontested lead throughout. He meets a handful of his rivals that he beat last time out, and with a couple of cheap sectionals down the back of the track, Hurley’s Hero will give some cheek out in front and prove hard to run down.

Next Best at Bairnsdale – Velicina

The Matthew Brown-trained Velicina is a mare who, on her day, gives plenty of cheek out in front, and that is just what you want in a galloper heading to Bairnsdale. The four-year-old daughter of Written Tycoon has not been seen at the races since October 15, 2021, so whatever she does on Tuesday, you would expect she improves on it second-up. However, she won an 800m trial at Cranbourne on July 4 in Heavy conditions, which should have her cherry ripe for this first-up assignment. Considering she has a win and two minor placings on rain-affected going, we know she will handle the conditions. Under a front-running ride from Brian Higgins, we expect Velicina will be too hard to run down in the second leg of the quaddie. We are more than happy to take $5 at Bet365 about a mare we have plenty of time for.

Best Value at Bairnsdale – Ima Dozer

With a bit of luck we have built a bank throughout the day and are still alive in the quaddie, just so we can launch into Ima Dozer in the last. The four-year-old gelding was too bad to be true at Moe last time out, but his effort prior – when nosed out at the same track – was good. His form heading into this is more than good enough, and despite dropping dramatically back from 2088m to the mile, we anticipate he is one of the key chances in this race. He has placed in both goes at the track, and despite drawing barrier 13, he looks certain to gain a cart across the field and should be lobbing in the one-one. He has one win and nine placings to his name from 18 starts, and if he is anywhere near his best, Ima Dozer gives a race like this a shake at an each-way price with online betting sites.

Race 8 – Silk #9 Ima Dozer (13)
