Grandparents land first ever treble
Local trainers dominated proceedings at Shepparton’s historic Saturday morning greyhound race meeting last weekend, and none more so than Tallygaroopna couple Fay and Theo Van Taarling. Seven of the 12 winners were trained locally, including three from the Van Taarling kennel. “This is the first time we’ve trained a treble,” said Theo, pictured above with wife Fay, their six grandchildren and three winners. The couple began training greyhounds in 1974 before hanging up the collar and lead for a 15 year period while putting their kids through school. They then…

Simon the Gr8
It’s quite simple… Triple Group 1 winner Simon Told Helen has reclaimed Australia’s No. 1 sprinter title. The catch-me-if-you-can speedster, with devastating mid-race acceleration, is an excitement machine! He’s a drawcard the sport needs in these troubled times. There was ‘great expectation’ around the Gr8 Eight Special Event (515m) tonight at Sandown – and it delivered in spades. Trained by David Burnett, Simon Told Helen ($1.30F) defeated arch-rival Tiggerlong Tonk ($4.30) fair and square – albeit the margin was a whisker – in a classic contest. G2 Horsham Cup winner…
Front-running tactic beats Sandown Cup field
Bronski Beat ($18.20) has won tonight’s Group 1 RSN Sandown Cup (715m) with a stunning all the way performance. The Tasmanian-bred greyhound opened up a huge lead mid-race before being challenged late by True Detective and He Shall Power. It was a watershed win for trainer Brendan Pursell, who is formerly of the Apple Isle. The win continued the Lara trainer’s incredible recent run of long-priced winners, having scored 12 city wins in the past fortnight at an average price of $14.80. Pursell finished third in last year’s Sandown Cup…
Banjo tuned for Oaks showdown
Sunday afternoon’s Healesville Oaks Final (350m) shapes as a showdown between exciting bookends Bring Your Banjo (box 1) and Bareki (box 8). Both youngsters have excellent strike rates early in their careers, with Bring Your Banjo claiming her 14th win from 26 starts when setting the pace in last weekend’s Oaks heats, where she upset odds on favourite Bareki, the winner of five from eight. Bring Your Banjo finished too strongly for Bareki, scoring by 1 ½ lengths in 19.38s, the quicker of the two Oaks heats. “I was hoping…
Jumpin’ Jack Flash
Boronia’s Ryan family treat greyhound racing with unbridled passion. So, they’ll be celebrating in style if Smart As Jack wins the $5600-to-the-winner Healesville Derby final (350m) on Sunday. According to Healesville GRC club manager Cynthia O’Brien, the Ryans “live and breathe greyhound racing”. Smart As Jack is owned by the Ryino Racing syndicate comprising Michael Ryan and his father, Darren. In fact, Michael named Smart As Jack after his younger brother Jack, 21, who is Healesville’s track curator. “We used to joke around as kids, and I would be the…
Group 1 Marshall primed for Meadows return
Just nine starts ago Perfect Marshall celebrated Group 1 glory at The Meadows, eclipsing a hand-picked field comprising the best middle distance gallopers in the land in the Rookie Rebel over 600m. But that dashing all-the-way triumph has been quickly forgotten in some circles and on Saturday night he will return to the track of that career-defining victory as an $11 chance in TAB’s market on race 6, the Gr8 Eight Special Event. While Perfect Marshall has been beaten at his last two starts, both from unsuitable box eight draws…
Prize money boost for level three and select provincial race meetings throughout June
Almost $290,000 in accrued unspent prize money will be shared across level three races and select provincial meetings from June 1 to June 30, GRV CEO Alan Clayton said. “Payment of unplaced prize money at many Level 3 race meetings (and selected provincial tracks), in June, will ensure that accrued unspent prize money is distributed to participants across all racing regions and help maintain nominations whilst we have expanded our racing program,” Mr Clayton said. “Unplaced prize money payments of $80 per unplaced runner will be distributed to participants at…
