Ballarat’s Enduro extravaganza!

The forward-thinking Ballarat GRC launches an exciting initiative next month – the Enduro (545m & 660m) / Tier 3 Cup (545m) series. In a proactive move, the club’s Racing Advisory Committee has received approval and support from GRV to schedule three weeks of 545m and 660m preludes, with the fourth week being a gala finals’ night. Sheldon Hamilton, on behalf of the BGRC RAC, says the progressive approach is designed to foster middle-distance and staying racing in a month-long series rather than one-off special events. He adds that the Enduro…

Clark’s ‘crystal ball’ with Playlist

There’s a fair bit of Nostradamus about Gippsland trainer Matthew Clark. Last week, Clark predicted he was “really confident” after Playlist drew box one in tonight’s Group 1 Vic Peters Classic (520m) at Wentworth Park in Sydney. And that was despite he had his champion litter brother, Catch The Thief, in the $75,000-to-the-winner final. “Catch The Thief made a mess of the start and a few other mistakes but I was really happy with Playlist’s run,” Clark said following the heats. “I’m really confident with Playlist from box one. I’ve…

Will Pies’ fans ‘smile’?

The Magpie army may be tempted to ‘sink its teeth’ into a TAB special cross-sport double tonight. The betting giant is offering $3 about Collingwood defeating Hawthorn by 6 points or more and the aptly named Flossing winning at Geelong greyhounds. And if it gets up, the Collingwood faithful will be sporting smiles a mile wide. Bounce down for the Pies v Hawks clash is at 7.50pm. Flossing, a recent finalist in the Group 2 Bendigo Cup, is in Race 7 Box 8 at 9.08pm – during half-time of the…

Flying ‘Hornet’

Have you heard the story about the once retired ‘couch potato’ who is still winning races? No? Well, read on… Black Hornet doesn’t ‘own’ a racing kennel – his lodging is a sofa under a pergola at the Anakie property his trainer Angela Langton runs with partner Jeff Britton. In fact, he shares the area and a one-acre free galloping paddock with four other pet greyhounds – including former racetrack stars Tarks Nemesis (pictured with Black Hornet) and Yowyeh. “Albert”, as he is affectionately known, was retired after finishing sixth…

Molly ready to Blaze again at The Meadows

Veteran trainer Ashley McDowall is wary about the chances of unbeaten youngster Molly Blazer continuing the perfect start to her career at The Meadows on Saturday night. Molly Blazer, a daughter of Mepunga Blazer and Mepunga Rosie, bred by McDowall’s great mate and GRV Hall of Fame member Barry Smith, has created a buzz in winning her first two starts at her home track of Warrnambool. “We’re more than happy with her. We’re over the moon,” said McDowall, who’s based at Nullawarre. “She’s started off good but she’s stepping up…

Sharps cheering Group 1 Junkie from afar

The once in a century closure of the Victoria/NSW border means Jason and Jessica Sharp will be watching from Avalon as they chase their first Group 1 victory in Saturday night’s Peter Mosman Opal (520m) in Sydney. The Sharps’ 18-year-old son Liam will be deputising for his parents at Wentworth Park with well-fancied Junk Food Junkie, a $4.40 chance with TAB in a wide-open female feature. “Liam travelled up to Sydney on Tuesday,” Jason Sharp said. “Liam always puts his hand up to handle in the Group races and he’s…

‘Ace’ in the pack

In terms of courage, it’s said: “Fate loves the fearless.” And in that respect, Weblec Ace epitomises such fortitude and gallantry! Early in December last year, while contesting a Ballarat Cup heat, Weblec Ace injured a right hind back muscle and was sent back to his South Australian part-owner Neville Loechel, 68, for rehabilitation. Unfortunately, not long after, he ran into a shrub which snapped off and speared into his shoulder causing a deep laceration which severed a vein. Loechel said “he was bleeding profusely, and the wound required veterinary…
