The Brad Widdup-trained Hyperbolic (NZ) (Proisir) ran out a ready winner of the Captivant @ Kia Ora Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday as the daughter of Proisir recorded her first metropolitan success.
Ridden by Tommy Berry, Hyperbolic jumped from barrier 2 and stalked the favourite Maid Of Moolah (Capitalist) and Bravissima (Deep field) and when presented mid-stretch pounced to score by a length and three-quarters.
Sporting the colours of Mulberry, Hyperbolic has now won four of her 12 starts and placed on another four occasions for Widdup, who watched the race from Japan.
“We were pretty confident once she drew that inside barrier we were going to use it today,” stable representative Rosie Jilla said.
“She was quite fresh coming into today and she had come through her first-up run really well and it was just a perfect race for her.
“Tommy Sherry rode her first-up and he was rapt with her. It might not have looked that good on paper but she just needed a bit further.
“It is fantastic to get winners for Mike Gregg of Mulberry and Lachie Sheridan. They are massive supporters of ours and Saturday winners are not easy to get.
“This filly is only improving and I think this is a good starting point for her.”
Tommy Berry said the mare gave him a great feel in the run and the stable had been reasonably bullish.
“They just thought that maybe it was a touch too short but she has just come back a bit sharper this preparation,” Berry said.
“I had to do a little bit of work early to hold that one-off position because I wanted to be in a spot coming to the corner where I could pull out and let her go through her gears. It was probably the winning move.”
Bred by Liz and Alan Galbraith, Celia Galbraith and Mike Lewis, Hyperbolic is by Rich Hill Stud stallion Proisir out of the four-win Sir Percy mare Piazza (NZ).
Widdup went to $240,000 to purchase Hyperbolic from the draft of Rich Hill Stud at the 2023 Karaka Yearling Sales, with the mare closely related to Group One performer Riodini (NZ) (Proisir).
