Moonee Valley Racecourse is the destination for feature racing in Victoria on Saturday afternoon, with the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) headlining proceedings. Clear skies are forecast leading into the meeting and on race day itself, meaning the initial Soft 5 track rating should firm to a Good 4 prior to the opening event. The rail comes out 5m, with the first race at The Valley jumping at 12:20pm AEST.
Carlyon Stakes Tip: Oak Hill
Oak Hill could not have been more impressive when winning on return at the Moonee Valley 1000m on August 9. The five-year-old gelding disposed of a similar field to what he faces in Saturday’s $175,000 feature, and considering they will be flying along out in front, the race sets up perfectly for him to swamp his rivals once more. He has three wins and a second at the track and trip, and as long as the surface allows backmarkers to run on, Oak Hill should prove too hard to hold out once more.

Best Bet at Moonee Valley: Exit
Not much went right for Exit at Flemington on August 2, when she finished third in a five-horse field. The three-year-old filly was comfortably beaten by Crossbow, but with a significant weight swing on that runner, she looks hard to beat on Saturday. The Ciaron Maher-trained will need a bit more pressure in the race, which will allow her to build through her gears and blouse her rivals — much like she did at Sandown the start prior.
Best Bet
Race 3 – #6 Exit (4)
3yo Filly | T: Ciaron Maher | J: Mark Zahra (56.5kg)
Next Best at Moonee Valley: Aleppo Pine
Aleppo Pine will have his first start as a three-year-old, and if he produces anything close to what he did as a juvenile, he will take a power of beating. The Blue Point colt wasn’t beaten far in stakes company before heading to the paddock, including finishing on the heels of subsequent Group 1 winner Nepotism in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m). From barrier 10, Mark Zahra will need a bit of luck to find a spot just behind the leaders early — but if he gets it, Aleppo Pine should prove too classy.

Race 5 – #1 Aleppo Pine (10)
3yo Colt | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Mark Zahra (57kg)
Best Value at Moonee Valley: Farhh Flung
Farhh Flung was strong through the line in defeat at the Moonee Valley 1200m last time out when coming from a rearward position. He went straight to the rear of the field from a wide draw but sustained a long run to the line when defeated by the in-form Shoeless. He meets that runner 2kg better at the weights this time around, and if Farhh Flung can find the right back to follow in the final 400m, he will be hard to hold out.
Best Value
Race 6 – #12 Farhh Flung (7)
7yo Gelding | T: Danny O’Brien | J: Zac Spain (54kg)
