Could today be the day for Macandrew Aviator at Ascot Park?

By Jonny Turner

Punters are banking on Macandrew Aviator ending a drought with victory in the Tuapeka Lodge Cup (4.56pm).

The eight-year-old has been installed a $2.50 second favourite, behind Dreams Are Free ($1.90) for the Ascot Park feature after building strong form this spring.

The pacer hasn’t been in the winner’s circle for over two years, though he has racked up plenty of placings in strong company in that time.

Macandrew Aviator is among a strong book of drives for junior driver Hayden Douglas, who is full of hope that the veteran’s winless run can end in the Ascot Park feature on Sunday.

“I think he would have to be my best chance,” Douglas said.

“Even off the 30m handicap, he is such a great beginner.”

“He went a great race over the mile last start and I think the 2700m will suit him a lot better.”

Later on the Tuapeka card, Douglas links up with Always B Batman who is also trained by his father, Jeremy.

The three-year-old ran on late in his last start at Wyndham on a fast-closing 400m.

Last time I drove him he didn’t get much luck, he was buried away on the fence and only got out late.”

“I think he’s a really good chance on Sunday.”

Ten Da Touch and Dragon Power also look handy chances for the Douglas and Douglas combination.

“Dragon Power has been going good races, he just struggles to get out of the gate that well.”

“If he could land handy enough on the outside, he should go a good race.”

“Ten Da Touch got shuffled back last start and he copped a slight check, so I was happy with his run.”

Douglas also rates Durrant a good hope on Tuapeka Lodge Cup Day.

Horse and driver have linked up twice recently for two third placings.

“He’s been going great guns lately and I think he’s a really good chance.”

Douglas also combines up with Miki Skipper and Northview Ocean on Sunday.
