By Adam Hamilton Inter Dominion-winning trainer Jason Grimson can’t wait to be part of the inaugural $900,000 The Race at Cambridge on Thursday week. Grimson happily accepted a late call-up with new stable star Majestic Cruiser when injury forced star mare Spellbound out of the race. “I had one condition … that he’d only go if Cam Hart went across and drove him,” Grimson said. “Cam’s really helped make this horse and deserves to drive him.” The other “deal maker” for Grimson was the fact his mate, Jack Trainor, was…

Polish orphan made a life with horses in New Zealand

By Garrick Knight courtesy of the HarnessXpress The passing occurred earlier this month of veteran Ardmore horseman and successful businessman, Alek Goryl. Poland-born Goryl, who was 89, came to New Zealand as an orphan during the latter part of the Second World War when he was still a young boy. Over the course of his life, he developed a very successful panel-beating business in Newton, Central Auckland, before eventually relocating it to his Ardmore property in 1997 which would allow him to continue his love of training horses. Until that…

The Race contenders back on track

By Adam Hamilton  Everything looks on target for Stylish Memphis and Alta Orlando heading towards Thursday week’s $900,000 The Race at Cambridge. Both pleased connections in defeat behind the very much in-form and classy Majestic Cruiser in a free-for-all at Menangle on Saturday night.  Stylish Memphis absolutely smashed the clock making plenty of ground from near last to finish fifth. While Alta Orlando led and improved a lot on the previous week by fighting on strongly to finish second, beaten just a half-neck by Majestic Cruiser in a slick 1min53.8sec…

The trainer has had just nine trotting starters in 21 years as a trainer with Martytecola his sole winner back in 2005. Hill admitted his recollection of…

Cash incentives to boost numbers at Alexandra Park

By Michael Guerin Alexandra Park are taking immediate measures to boost field sizes during April. The Auckland Trotting Club has been disappointed, and like many, slightly perplexed by the recent struggles to get larger fields and only attracted enough horses for six races at tonight’s meeting. It constantly attracts less horses than Cambridge meetings which race for lesser stakes, with one possible factor the fear of horses not being able to win at Alexandra Park, which considering the struggles for numbers at the Auckland track seems largely unfounded. But the…

Bond continues outstanding start to 2022

By Jonny Turner Two out of three ain’t bad according to the late singer Meat Loaf, as well as the man known as Bondy in harness racing circles. Lyndon ‘Bondy’ Bond took three horses to Winton yesterday and produced a race-to-race winning double with Fast Whispering and Step It Up A Notch. Bond was one of three trainers to double up on an 11 race card with Kirstin Barclay and Amber Hoffman also producing two wins each. In Bond’s case, the trainer quickly turned around disappointing performances by his two…
