Reid to ponder his driving future

By Michael Guerin Steven Reid says his driving days may be over after a freak accident at Alexandra Park on Friday night. But he realises it could have ended a lot worse. Reid was driving Take The Miki, the talented pacer he trains with partner Simon McMullan, in race two when the sulky seat came loose and slipped off, dumping Reid on to the track around the 180m mark. That wasn’t much fun but Reid was relatively unscathed until Enjoy Me ran over him as he lay on the track,…

Bright future tipped for Wheels Of Fortune

By Joshua Smith, Harness News Desk A bright future has been tipped for Wheels Of Fortune after his dominant win in the Anne Thompson Memorial Graduation Final (2600m) at Rangiora on Sunday. Trainer-driver John Hay pushed the three-year-old gelding forward early to wrestle the lead off Backburn. Driver John Dunn then sent race favourite Absolute Dynamite three-wide to sit outside Wheels Of Fortune, but Hay resisted handing up the lead. That move proved to be a masterstroke, with Wheels Of Fortune running away to a 2-3/4 length lead over Absolute…

Aussie News – May 22

by Adam Hamilton  Former high-class Kiwi pacer Triple Eight looks set for another big campaign. The Jess Tubbs-trained seven-year-old returned from a break with a dominant win, thanks to a perfect trip and a lovely Greg Sugars drive. It was Triple Eight’s first start finishing third in the Group 1 Ainsworth FFA on that rain-drenched track on the Miracle Mile night which was postponed straight after that race. Triple Eight has thrived in the care of Tubbs and Sugars and now boasts 18 wins and 30 placings from his 82…

Faithful dedicates win to Crawford

By Jonny Turner Trainer Chelsea Faithful dedicated Pay Me Speedy’s win at Ascot Park on Saturday to the memory of Dunedin horseman Leon Crawford following his passing earlier in the week. Known as a man of many talents with horses, Crawford was a successful trainer and driver, farrier and worked on many horses’ ailments through his work as an equine therapist, chiropractor and acupuncturist. The former Tomahawk trainer died peacefully, surrounded by his family, in Dunedin on Thursday. Crawford was a close family friend of Faithful’s and he also treated…

Musclyn primed for Rangiora

By Joshua Smith, Harness News Desk The connections of in-form trotter Musclyn are starting to reap the rewards for their patience with their four-year-old mare and they are hoping her purple patch of form continues in the Goodwin Contracting Trot (2000m) at Rangiora on Sunday. The daughter of Muscle Mass won first-up in April before posting two placings and trainers Phillipa Wakelin and Lance Noble believe she has finally started to mature. “We have always held her in very high regard,” Wakelin said. “From when we broke her in we…

Perfect weekend for Williamson

By Jonny Turner An explosive performance from Love N The Port gave Phil Williamson a perfect weekend before it really got started. The talented trotter returned to his best form for driver Matthew Williamson with an emphatic ten-length demolition of an intermediate grade field in race 3 at Addington on Friday night. Brilliant during the New Zealand Cup Carnival, Love N The Port hadn’t shown his best in three starts after being freshened in January. In his last outing at Addington, the four-year-old ran outwards and showed how trotters can…

Port Pegasus heads Norman’s team

By Jonny Turner Port Pegasus is at the right place to break his run of second placings at Ascot Park on Saturday. The four-year-old will be out to secure a deserved win when he heads a team of eight starters from Brian Norman’s stable. Port Pegasus was nailed late by Top Pocket Chance at Winton in his last outing after running second to his big brother Andy Hall at Ascot Park. Like many of his followers, Norman thinks the trotter deserves a win in race 4. With both of his…

Sundees Son shows his class, again

By Michael Guerin Sprinting has never really been Sundees Son’s strength but he did it well enough to just win another Group 1 in the $100,000 Anzac Cup at Alexandra Park on Friday night. The champion trotter sprung two surprises in the 2200m mobile, first by holding Bolt For Brilliance at the start then by being allowed to dawdle through the middle stages of the race in a 68-second half. That was partly due to the waterlogged Alexandra Park track, also because driver John Dunn decided an easy run wouldn’t…

Self Assured’s win in Roy Purdon Memorial – “it means a lot”

By Michael Guerin Self Assured produced the perfect Auckland Cup trial with the most fitting of wins in the first running of the $75,000 Roy Purdon Memorial at Alexandra Park on Friday night. The hot favourite overcame a 20m handicap in the 2200m event and clawed his way past a brave Kango in the final stages on a rain-soaked track, with Bad To The Bone third. The winner is of course co-trained and driven by Mark Purdon, who was thrilled to win the race named in honour of his legendary…

CTOA on recruitment drive

Well-known racing identity Nigel Armstrong has big plans. As the new president of the Canterbury Trotting Owners Association (CTOA) he wants the organisation to flourish. “We’ve got about 60 members now and we want to get to over 500 this year,” Armstrong says.   One of his ideas to increase numbers is to get the Association out among the hundreds of owners sprinkled around the province by aligning themselves with as many stables as they can.   For a yearly subscription of $250 stables can partner with the CTOA.
