by Jonny Turner The Hydroflow Winter Rewards Final at Addington on Thursday night went from disastrous to triumphant for Aint No Angel. It was a hard watch for backers of the mare who was caught wide with trainer-driver Brad Williamson for most of the first lap of the event But some assertive driving from Williamson turned his charge’s fortunes completely around as she went on to produce a great staying performance to win. “It looked like I was going to be able to slot into a really nice spot in…

Dream Of You big chance despite backmark at Alexandra Park
By Michael Guerin Dream Of You has often looked an open class trotter in the making and he just might need to be to win at Alexandra Park tonight. The four-year-old trotter might end up being the best horse racing at tonight’s Winter Rewards meeting which sees four races boosted to $20,000 to reward those who have done the hard yards over winter. One who has done those yards more successfully than most is Dream Of You, who faces a 20m backmark in the Dean Biddlecombe Memorial, the major trot…

By Jonny Turner Trainers have their winter performers ready to take advantage of the lucrative Winter Rewards Finals on a big night of racing at Addington on Thursday night. Opawa Louie is set to start the favourite in the first of the $20,000 contests after recently moving to Aaron Swain’s barn. Racing community urged to get behind mental health forum
A three hour session specifically tackling mental health in the racing industry will be held at Addington Raceway next month. Called “Equiconnect” the seminar, at Addington Raceway on August 17, will canvas a number of issues relating to harness and thoroughbred racing, and more. “We want to connect with trainers, drivers, cadets, coaches – in fact anyone involved in equestrian sports,” says Equiconnect organiser and rural health mentor Craig “Wiggy” Wiggins (pictured above). “There are high stresses and strains in racing, from the pressure to make a living and to…

Court back in winner’s circle Best known for his New Zealand Cup winning heroics with Terror To Love, Paul Court has been back in the winner’s circle, this time in Canada where he’s lived on and off since 2008. The Court-trained Hail Christian won his 23rd race at Georgian Downs earlier this month. That took Hail Christian’s earnings past $400,000. Trained by Paul Court in this country Hail Christian won nine from 45 before heading off to Australia and then North America. Paul and his father Graham (pictured above) trained…
Veteran pacer upsets for Kiwi connections
By Michael Guerin Champion trainer Barry Purdon may not have had the Queensland Derby night experience he was planning on a few months ago but his Saturday night at Albion Park came with a bonus. Purdon was planning to take Northern Derby winner Merlin to the Queensland carnival but those plans changed with the outstanding young pacer was sidelined in the autumn. That meant he missed not only the Queensland Derby won so brilliantly by The Lost Storm on Saturday night but the Rising Sun won dramatically by Leap To…
The big “moments” that helped Katie Cox
by Rob Courtney Katie Cox is forever grateful to Paul Corkran when the longtime owner-breeder-trainer decided to get out of the horses and sell his Leeston property. That was about six years ago. Those decisions led to Cox acquiring, among others, Stay A Moment (Armbro Invasion – Nakura), Love A Moment (Love You – Stay A Moment) and recent Addington winner Spy Da Moment. Stay A Moment was in foal to Majestic Son, Love A Moment was broken in as a 4yo but was untried and Spy Da Moment, who’s…
Aussie News – July 24
By Adam Hamilton Brilliant three-year-old The Lost Storm’s TAB Eureka chances have soared on all levels. Not only did he win the Group 1 Queensland Derby by half the straight, but the two biggest guns (outside of him) in the TAB Eureka – Leap To Fame and Catch A Wave – suffered shock defeats. Defeat was never likely for The Lost Storm who worked to the front and won without being extended by 16.5m in a slick 1min55.2sec mile rate for 2680m. He ripped home in 54.2 and 27.1sec. And…
Ruby a Delight for McDermott at Addington
By Jonny Turner John McDermott would love a stable full of Ruby’s A Delights. The veteran mare made it career win number eight in her 101st start at Addington on Sunday. McDermott describes his six-year-old as a great trying pacer who gives it her all every time she steps out on to the track. That was evident in her win on Sunday as Ruby’s A Delight kept winding up in the home straight to fight off a wave of attackers for driver Ricky May. “She is just one of those…
