Victoria’s 2020 coursing season opened with a full card of 12 events at Lang Lang on Sunday, and among the coursing faithful delighted to see the return of the code was Diane Ireland. Based in Knowsley (around 30km out of Bendigo), Ireland has been a passionate coursing participant since the 1970s, and she had a successful outing. Her greyhound Secret Thoughts won Event 3 (Kingston Trophies Maiden – Mixed) with a ‘walkover’, while another of her competitors, Stareena finished runner-up to Secret Bliss in Event 4 (LLCC Maiden -Mixed). CEO’s Monthly Update: June
It has been another busy month on the track with highlights including the Warrnambool Cup and the Sandown May Carnival along with a full calendar of regular race meetings.
Nip of ‘Scotch’
Back in early May, megastar Hooked On Scotch returned from a four-month enforced layoff and won brilliantly on G2 Warrnambool Cup night. But the comeback was short-lived as, at his next start 15 days later, he sustained minor muscle-related injuries when seventh to You Tell Me at Sandown. It precipitated another two weeks off the racing scene, but the “fastest chaser on the planet” does a ‘take 2’ – this time at Shepparton tomorrow. Okay, it’s not the group racing arena to which we’ve become accustomed to with Hooked On…
Cindy goes ‘riding on the greyhounds’, yeah
Cranbourne-based Cindy Alderson is a third-generation racehorse trainer who has been associated with a host of Group 1 winners trained by her father, Colin – including Sky Heights, Inaflury, La Volta and Pindi. Cindy, who first got on a horse’s back as a three-year-old, obtained her training licence in 1990. She was among the first women in Australia to be granted a permit to train and achieved metropolitan success with the first horse she trained – Old Magician. Under the ‘Alderson Racing’ banner, Colin (who retired in 2016) and Cindy…
Gr8, greater, greatest…
Greyhound trainers, along with racing fans and punters, have warmed to the popular Gr8 Eight series. The concept was developed for Victoria’s top-class greyhounds to race for above-average prizemoney in a climate where there are travelling restrictions and changes to Australia’s group racing calendar due to COVID-19. Four of the 12 x Special Events have already been conducted and attracted Group 1-like fields. And the fifth, over 595m at Sandown on Thursday night (Race 5, 7.25pm), is no exception. Expert form analyst The Watchdog rates the race a match in…

Extended terms for RITA directors
Minister for Racing Winston Peters has announced that the terms for the directors of the Racing Industry Transition Agency (RITA) have been extended to 30 June 2021. Due to the COVID-19 crisis the transition period has been extended to ensure that the Racing Industry Bill can complete its progress through the House at a time when the current focus on the Covid-19 response is reduced. “We knew from the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis that the racing industry was facing an unparalleled crisis in its history,” Peters said. “The racing…
‘Wild Boar’ is an eye catcher!
The ‘Wild Boar Racing’ syndicate is a cracking yarn about how unifying the world of greyhound racing can be in bringing people together. Its manager Corey Smith recently caught up with SEN Track’s Thrill of the Chase team to explain the catalyst behind the syndicate’s formation. “It’s a real mixed bag,” Smith said. “Quite a few of us from Uni that lived on college together loved the greyhounds. We went to the races all the time and decided to buy one.” “Then we got family involved, so all up there’s…
