Impressive triallist Show Bazz (NZ) (Showcasing) made an eye-catching debut when he trounced his maiden rivals over 1200m at Ashburton on Saturday. The Showcasing three-year-old had won a 1000m trial at Motukarara back in January and backed that up post the COVID19 lockdown with another comfortable victory at Rangiora in June over 850m. Co-trainer Kevin Hughes, who prepares the gelding with wife Pam, wasn’t keen to line his charge up on the heavy surfaces presented at their home base at Riccarton in recent weeks, preferring to wait for the Dead6…

London Express back to winning form at Matamata
Talented winter galloper London Express (NZ) (Shamexpress) bounced back from an unlucky run first-up at Te Rapa last month with a determined effort to score over 1200m at Matamata. The five-year-old Shamexpress mare had been buffeted several times when resuming over the same distance at Te Rapa with trainer Allan Sharrock somewhat disappointed in the ride of his apprentice Hazel Schofer on that occasion. Sharrock provided Schofer with opportunity to redeem herself on Saturday and she covered herself in glory with a copybook effort despite once again suffering some jostling…
Tammie Wynette fulfils perfect script for Coxon
Kim Coxon couldn’t have scripted a better end to her current time as a licensed trainer when Tammie Wynette (NZ) (Tobique) provided her with the perfect farewell at Matamata on Saturday. Coxon has handed in her trainer’s license as she prepares to move to the Te Puke region with fiancée James Taylor, where the pair will run a combined dry-stock and kiwifruit operation. Coxon has been training a small team in her own right at Matamata since her father Richard passed away after a battle with cancer five years ago.…

Tenzing guiding Tommy’s climb
Young Murchison trainer Tommy Wark will be striving to continue his climb through the ranks when the aptly-named Miss Tenzing contests Sunday’s heats of the Healesville Super Sprint Series (300m). Miss Tenzing, a member of the very first litter 31-year-old Wark bred, is named after Tenzing Norgay, who famously accompanied Edmund Hillary on his historic conquest of Mount Everest in 1953. And the superbly-related daughter of super sire Barcia Bale is fast making a name for herself, winning four of her first seven starts. “I’m rapt with how she’s going,”…
Sydney sprint options beckon Catalyst
Te Awamutu horseman Clayton Chipperfield is pleased with the progress of his stable star Catalyst as he builds towards a spring campaign in Sydney. The son of Darci Brahma is likely to have at least one trial before crossing the Tasman and is set to have a hit-out at the Taupo trials on August 12. “He will go there and have a nice blowout and we will know where he is at from there, but he certainly feels a lot bigger under me and is a lot stronger,” Chipperfield said.…
Best season to date for Carston
Riccarton trainer Andrew Carston is looking forward to kicking off the new racing season at Ashburton on Saturday, following a 10th place finish in the 2019-20 trainers’ premiership. Carston, who trains between 30 and 35 horses, had 30 wins, three at black-type level. “A top 10 finish is obviously a great result,” Carston said. “It’s an honour just to see my name amongst so many great trainers who I have a lot of respect for.” Carston said the improving quality of his equine team and his dedicated staff were key…
