Hong Kong racing is the lifeblood for many New Zealand trainers, and Cambridge horsewoman Catherine Cameron is no exception. A large part of her business is educating and pre-training horses for the lucrative racing jurisdiction, primarily for bloodstock agent Willie Leung and his clients. While it’s usually one way traffic to Hong Kong for her stable members, Cameron’s strong link with Leung resulted in a former Hong Kong runner joining her barn last year. “My main client is Willie Leung and I normally have about half a dozen of his…

Industry ‘leads’ the way…
In a unanimous decision, precipitated by unprecedented times, the 2019-20 Greyhound Racing Victoria Board Leadership Award recipient is the ‘whole industry’. “We have changed it up,” said GRV Chair, Ms Peita Duncan. “We had a Board meeting where we chose who that recipient would be, and to be honest, it was unanimous because of the year we’ve had.” Ms Duncan added: “It’s not just around the COVID pandemic at the moment, but getting through the bushfires and canine (corona)virus, which means we lost race meetings because we didn’t have enough…
Whiskey Riot raises GOTY glasses
Anthony Azzopardi has achieved just about everything greyhound racing has to offer since moving to Victoria in 2016 and he celebrated another major accolade when Whiskey Riot was named 2019/20 Victorian Greyhound of the Year. Azzopardi relocated from NSW to test himself in Australia’s greyhound racing capital and says the depth of competition makes Melbourne Cup hero Whiskey Riot’s achievement even more satisfying. “It’s quite an achievement by the dog,” said Azzopardi at Sunday’s announcement. “The best dogs are down here in Victoria – it’s very hard racing – and…

Another Anakie trainer, Jeff Britton, was runner-up (80 wins) and Pearcedale’s Jason Thompson third (62 wins). Dailly also secured the ‘country’ gong with 214 wins, ahead…
Sierra Sue scores first-up
New Zealand-bred mare Sierra Sue (NZ) (Darci Brahma) proved a class above her opposition at Sale on Sunday when taking out her 1200m contest. It was the first hit-out of the season for the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained four-year-old who has now won four of her six career starts, with all four coming on the Sale track. Her trainers were pleased with her efforts, but admitted they were slightly concerned about her fitness levels heading into her first-up assignment. “We were a bit concerned about her fitness, but the…
Hindaam breaks maidens
The Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes-trained Hindaam (NZ) (Savabeel) made light work of her opposition to break through for her maiden win over 1200m at Pakenham on Monday. It was just the second start for the three-year-old daughter of Savabeel who finished runner-up over 1100m at Bendigo on debut. Sporting the colours of Shadwell Stud, the filly jumped well from her wide barrier and was sent forward early by jockey Daniel Stackhouse to settle in the one-one. Stackhouse asked his charge to improve three-wide turning for home and took the…
Former Kiwi horseman passes away
Former New Zealand jockey and trainer Ray Cleaver has died in Victoria just a few days after saddling up a runner at Mornington last Thursday. Cranbourne-based Cleaver (70) was rushed to hospital last Saturday after a suspected stroke and died the following day. “It comes as a bit of shock really,” Robbie Griffiths, a fellow trainer and the president of the Australian Trainer’s Association said. “He was a bit of a larrikin – a loveable rogue around Cranbourne. He had a small team in recent years, but always did well…
