The all-important box draw for Saturday night’s $429,000 Group 1 Australian Cup was broadcast live on 7Two’s Thrill of the Chase this morning, with connections of the eight contenders on track at The Meadows for the occasion. Interestingly, the three most accomplished group performers in the final – Tommy Shelby, Tiggerlong Tonk and Christo Bale – all draw awkwardly in boxes 4, 7 & 8 respectively, throwing the race wide open. Moments following the box draw TAB’s Trent Langskaill announced Tommy Shelby and Fernando Bluey as the equal favourites at…

THE ‘AVENGER’
The Watchdog was ‘back in the black’ with a 30% profit for punters yesterday. And the form expert now settles on a young ‘Avenger’ to prove a ‘marvel’ in a $10,000-to-the-winner final at Sale. But who are the arch rivals out to stop this potential ‘superhero’? You’ll only find out by clicking on today’s ‘Daily Mail’.
Christo’s testing Cup comeback
Trainer Mark Delbridge isn’t about to die wondering with Christo Bale, with the versatile star to return from an injury break in Saturday night’s heats of the TAB Australian Cup (525m) at The Meadows. Christo Bale, $4 second elect with TAB in heat seven, is better known for his middle-distance exploits, winning the Group 2 McKenna Memorial (595m), finishing second in the Group 1 Hume Cup (600m) and running fourth in the Group 1 Sale Cup (650m). But the powerhouse galloper is by no means out of place in elite…
Zack ‘shackles’ Houdini
West Australian wonder Zack Monelli ‘unlocked’ the secret to ‘sinking’ Victorian staying magician Houdini Boy in a mesmerising Fanta Bale Super Stayers heat (725m) at The Meadows tonight. Under the caretaker Victorian trainership of Lyn Smith at Nambrok, Zack Monelli employed catch-me-if-you-can tactics to cause a minor upset in Heat 3. With a lap to travel, Zack Monelli was 10-12L in front of Houdini Boy, who was intent on pulling off another last-to-first ‘escape’. And he almost did the unimaginable! But on the line, Zack Monelli ($4.10) had 0.23L to…
Vale Poke The Bear
Poke The Bear, one of Australia’s greatest sprinters in recent memory, has succumbed to cancer at just five years of age. The son of Fernando Bale and Nicki Fields was part of an all-conquering litter which included Out Of Range and Fully Loaded, while he was also a half-brother to the electrifying Hooked On Scotch. Bred and owned by Victorian father-son team Darren and Michael Puleio and trained by Seona Thompson, Poke The Bear retired in 2019 with 37 wins from 69 starts and over half a million dollars in…
‘SHIMA’ TO SHINE?
The nation’s premier sprinter will need to produce his best ‘shimmy’ in a G1 Australian Cup heat. Why? Because he’s opposed to a few ‘twinkle toes’ poised to ‘burn the floor’! Find out more on this ‘big dance’ by clicking on today’s ‘Daily Mail’.
March R2R auction cancelled
Bendigo has cancelled its March Ready 2 Race auction but is expecting to make a strong return to its traditional time slot in November.
Matt’s field of dreams
A few months ago, on Thrill of the Chase, we told the story of Matthew Field, a young bloke with spina bifida that’s been a regular visitor at the Ballarat greyhounds (among other racetracks) for years. Everybody knows him there, and he’s come to gain some respect as a tipster, but even more as a lover of the breed. It was only last year, when COVID restrictions were keeping Matt from his weekly night at the track, he managed to adopt a dog of his own, Apache (formerly Wind Whistler).…
All for the Children
By Lou Martin Walking into the absolutely beautiful gardens of Government House in Melbourne today was a proud day for our industry as greyhound racing in Victoria was recognised for its generosity in assisting to raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH). Invited to take part in a morning tea to commemorate 90 years of fundraising for the Royal Children’s Hospital, Chair Peita Duncan, and myself, were simply delighted to represent the larger greyhound family in what has been a real team effort. Having raised more than $100,000 for…
Public attendance at race meetings
Following further consultation with the Office of Racing and the Chief Health Officer, GRV can advise that members of the public can attend race meetings effective immediately, dependent on density requirements. This paves the way for the public to join registered GRV participants at the track for the Australian Cup heats meeting on Saturday 20 February at The Meadows. Each event is ticketed and seated only, therefore numbers are limited and based on the individual clubs’ COVIDSafe plan according to the Public Events Framework (pre-approved by DJPR). No walk ups…
