‘Flame’ to fire in war of Roses

Regally bred Aston Flame, one of the headline acts in Sunday afternoon’s Bendigo Roses heats (425m), might be on the timid side away from the racetrack but proud trainer Ian Garland says she’s certainly no shrinking violet in the heat of the action. Aston Flame is bred in the purple, being a daughter of Aston Miley, a litter sister to Melbourne Cup winner and exciting young stud dog Aston Dee Bee, and her litter to US sire KC And All also includes potential superstar Aston Rupee and Aston Fastnet. So…

Brown toast and vegemite? Och Eye, Mum…

Sometimes you just have to give yourself a birthday present. Such was the case at Geelong on 8 June, when Och Eye Mum (Fernando Bale – Rockin’ Josie) saw her fourth birthday coming and gave herself a win: her first, from 57 starts. Proud St. Albans owner/trainer Andy Morrison explained his joy succinctly: “If I could have done a summersault I would have!” Speaking with Gareth Hall on RSN, Andy also personified the spirit of persistence, the importance of the greyhound community and the way greyhounds become mates. Andy’s been…

Roughie needs golden Geall touch

Jeff Geall will need some of his high-flying brother David’s magic to rub off on Zipping Clifford if the 70-start roughie is to cause a surprise in Saturday night’s 600m FFA at The Meadows (race 6 at 8.07pm). Jeff is a relative newcomer to the training ranks and didn’t have to look far for an ideal mentor. He works in partnership with Lara-based David, who’s enjoying a fantastic run in 2021 with two-time country cups winner Ferdinand Boy and boom prospect Koblenz, winner of his past nine. But Jeff concedes…

Shima and Demons – let it snow!

There’s ‘no season like snow season’ – but Dees’ fans have put their ‘Toorak tractors’ away, if you’ll excuse the pun. That’s how well Melbourne is travelling this year! And that’s why Demons’ supporters will paradoxically get on ‘skis’ for a quick piece of TAB’s AFL/Greys Saturday night action. TAB is offering $4.50 about Melbourne ‘snowballing’ Essendon and budding champ Shima Classic winning at The Meadows. The Demons are perched on top of the ladder with 11 wins from 13 matches and Essendon 10th with six wins. Inexplicably, Melbourne went…

Tiges & Yankee ‘doodle dandy’

Check out Friday night’s ‘doodle dandy’ AFL/Greys offer from TAB, which is sure to have Tiges’ fans ‘sticking a feather in their cap’ – and mitts in their wallets! The betting giant’s $3.50 proposition is for Richmond to defeat St Kilda by 26pts or more and Gypsy Yankee to go ‘riding on a pony’ at Geelong. Richmond is eighth with seven wins from 13 matches and St Kilda 13th with five wins. The Tiges and Saints are both coming off byes. It’s also worth recalling Richmond belted St Kilda to…

Daily Mail: Winter sparkle

Pink Diamond graduate Mepunga Ruby may have only had nine starts (five wins), but she is the greyhound to beat in tonight’s main event, the $15,250 Winter Cup Final (660m) at Bendigo. However, she’ll need to overcome some well-credentialled opposition including SA star Shadow Mist (27 wins). Read more Another big name racing at Bendigo tonight is Blackpool Flash (23 from 42), who made it four straight wins in last Sunday’s Puppy Championship Final at Healesville. Speaking of the Yarra Valley straight – a great battle will take place there…

Diamond finish for 2020-21 year

Industry update Greyhound Racing Victoria’s (GRV) inaugural Pink Diamond series for Victorian-bred dogs of all ages and abilities was a great finish to an exceptional year for the sport. The series, held across five provincial tracks from 4-18 June, boasted prize money and breeder bonuses of around $800,00 – $600,000 on finals night -making it the richest provincial race in Victoria, if not the world. Two hundred and twenty Victorian breeders, and many more trainers and owners, took part. Strong praise and endorsements from leading trainers and fans helped generate…

Life of Bryan

Young Upper Beaconsfield breeder-owner-trainer Bryan Sykes, 25, has found his ‘path in life’ – greyhound racing. Late last year, Sykes gave up his job as a financial analyst for the Reece Group – Australia’s largest plumbing and bathroom supplies business – to concentrate on full-time training. “It (Reece) wasn’t working for me, so I thought I’d take a ‘sabbatical’,” Sykes said. Subsequently he was unearthed as an amazing ‘grassroots’ success story during the inaugural ‘Pink Diamond’ series. Sykes took out last week’s Pink Diamond Veterans final (425m) at Bendigo with…

Daily Mail: Heavyweights to renew acquaintances
