The Kosciuszko is a 1200 metre sprint contest run under set weights and penalties conditions in mid October held at Randwick Racecourse with $1,300,000 worth of prize money on offer.
To contest The Kosciuszko horses must be under the care of a country trainer with a current stable return lodged on or before midnight May 16, 2022. Anything after this voids the eligibility date.
The Kosciuszko is open to horses with a NSW benchmark below 110 and trained in Country NSW or the ACT as at and subsequent to the eligibility date.
Horses wishing to participate in the race must have had at least one NSW race start for an eligible trainer to qualify for The Kosciuszko. Those contesting the 2022 Kosciuszko must for twelve months after the race, remain under the care of a trainer eligible for the race.
First run in 2018, Belflyer for John Shelton shocked the racing world when claiming The Kosciuszko at $71 odds.

Betting on The Kosciuszko
Outside of It’s Me who won the race in 2020, three of the four editions of The Kosciuszko has been taken out by male horses.
Despite the race only being in existence for four years, favourites have won two of the four races. It’s Me ($2) in 2020 and Art Cadeau ($4) in 2021.
Remarkably the only time a winner has paid a double figure quote with online bookmakers, was when Belflyer ($71) took out the inaugural edition of the race in 2018.
Barrier seven has already produced two winners in the brief history of The Kosciuszko, suggesting perhaps drawing the middle of the line is no disdvantage.

This was a classic race in every sense of the word. Art Cadeau chasing down Handle The Truth on the straight after a long duel to win a thriller. The Terry Robinson-trained Art Cadeau became the first runner to complete the Kosciuszko / Country Championships double and solidified himself as one of the best horses on the country scene. Despite seemingly peaking on his run with 100m to go, Tommy Berry got the most out of Art Cadeau and lifted him to victory, nabbing the 2019 winner Handle The Truth on the winning post.

In the short history of The Kosciuszkio, there is little doubt that It’s me’s win in 2020 is the most remarkable of them all. When entering the home straight, the Brett Cavanough-trained mare found endless amounts of traffic and no clear air until the 300m mark. Once clear, she had some five-lengths to make up and with Mitch Beer’s Redouble darting back to the rail, she looked to have been a good thing beaten. However, with a calm Jason Collett on board and an enormous finishing burst, It’s Me knuckled down inside the final 100m and brought up a truly breathtaking victory by a half head on the line.

Ridden by Nash Rawiller, Handle The Truth was rock solid at $7 with AU betting sites and after stalking the speed he shot to the front and held on to score by a length over $2.70 favourite Victorem with Bobbing ($26) another half-head back. The win will go down in history as most memorable for trainer Keith Dryden’s post-race interview: “I said if he runs top five I’ll be happy, if he runs top three I’ll be ecstatic and if he wins there will be a party on,” Dryden said. Party they did.

Northern Rivers trainer John Shelton has won many big races in his local area and beyond but none bigger than the $1.3 million Kosciuszko at Randwick. Punters disregarded Belflyer’s second in the Ramornie Handicap at Grafton in June and sent the sprinter out at $71. But Adam Hyeronimus and Belflyer didn’t look at the odds and the seven-year-old stormed home to beat Suncraze ($15) by half a length with Awesome Pluck ($9) another short neck third in the inaugural running of The Kosciuszko.
