Amalfi Prince to chase bigger targets

Smart three-year-old Amalfi Prince (Sebring) will continue on a black-type path after his upset win in Saturday’s Gr.3 Manawatu Classic (2000m) at Awapuni. The three-year-old gelding gave trainer Mark Walker his first stakes win since returning to the helm of Te Akau Racing’s New Zealand operation and Walker said the Gr.2 Trelawney Stud Championship (2100m) would be the next task for the son of Sebring. “He goes to Pukekohe on the 23rd for the Trelawney Stud Championship,” Walker said. “If he happened to come out and win or place then…

Champagne clash with Fireburn beckons for Wolverine

Gifted filly Wolverine (NZ) (Tivaci) is in the mix to cross the Tasman in a bid to gate crash Fireburn’s (Rebel Dane) party in the final leg of Sydney’s two-year-old Triple Crown series. A decision will be made in the coming days whether the Roydon Bergerson-prepared juvenile heads across the Tasman for the Gr.1 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday week. If the venture is confirmed, Wolverine will take on the star Australian youngster Fireburn who followed up her dashing Gr.1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) victory…

Stakes target in the offing for Tavattack

A stakes target is in the offing for Tavattack (NZ) (Tavistock) after he made it back-to-back wins in the Resonant Premier (1600m) at Awapuni on Saturday. Trainer Allan Sharrock was pleased with the run and said he is now contemplating a return to the Palmerston North track for the Listed Manawatu ITM ANZAC Mile (1550m) later this month with the gelding. “I thought his win was solid and his sectionals in his last two races have been very good,” Sharrock said. “He is a progressive horse. He is now rated…
