Awapuni trainer Lisa Latta is waiting to see what horses remain in the Gr.1 Barneswood Farm New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) before deciding whether to take Platinum Machine south to Riccarton for the race. Platinum Machine produced a stylish effort to break maiden status against older horses in the Hiremaster 1600 at Trentham on Sunday, rounding up her opponents approaching the turn and winning by a comfortable half length. The victory in the hands of Lisa Allpress followed second placings at Awapuni and Waverley. “I’ve always had a fair bit…

O’Shea looking to plunder Rosehill Gold
Trainer John O’Shea has withstood the urge to tackle the A$7.5 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday with Lion’s Roar in favour of the A$750,000 Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m) on the same card. The Gr.1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) winner has taken plenty of work this season, but O’Shea was buoyed by his last start performance when finishing third in the Gr.3 Craven Plate (2000m) at Randwick earlier this month. “His run the other day was fantastic, it just topped him off. He has been a bit above weight…
Red-letter weekend for Trelawney
It was a memorable weekend for Trelawney Stud principals Brent and Cherry Taylor, with three of their racing team carrying their green, red, and gold silks to victory, including two at stakes level. Cheaperthandivorce (NZ) (Savabeel) was the first to secure a stakes scalp for the Waikato nursery over the weekend when she recorded a 1-3/4 length victory over Justaskme (NZ) (No Excuse Needed) in the Gr.3 Thompson Handicap (1600m) at Trentham on Sunday. It was the second run for the Savabeel mare this preparation after winning first-up at Hastings…
Fiery Red spearheads Price team at Gore
Unbeaten galloper Fiery Red (NZ) (Iffraaj) will be out to enhance Winton trainer Sophie Price’s enviable strike rate over the past couple of seasons when she tackles the Thomas Green 1200 at Gore on Wednesday. Iffraaj four-year-old mare Fiery Red was a debut winner at Riverton in May and goes into the Rating 65 race with the benefit of a 1000m jumpout win at Winton last month. “She’s worked up really well. She’s quite a hot mare. I was going to take her straight to Dunedin but she’s just thinking…
Carston painting a 1000 Guineas picture for filly
Andrew Carston believes Art De Triomphe’s (NZ) (Vadamos) best shot at Classic glory on her home track next month will be against her own sex. The Riccarton-based trainer’s preference is to tackle the Gr.1 Barneswood Farm New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) with his in-form daughter of Vadamos, who is on the third line of betting at $6 for the November 13 feature. Art De Triomphe is currently a $14 chance in the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m), to be run a week earlier, but Carston…

Third time lucky for Methven
It’s taken a while but finally the Methven Trotting Club will host a meeting on its home track. This Friday the club’s twilight meeting will be held at its Mt Harding track, after its two previous meetings this season were transferred to Ashburton and then Orari. The track was damaged in September when 110 kilometre an hour winds toppled trees and dumped debris on the grass track. Now they’ve been given the all-clear to race again. “It’s not perfect but it’s safe and there is good footing,” says Methven Trotting…

Wilson in the House at Manawatu
by Dave Di Somma, Harness News Desk It’s not like Wilson House is dipping his toes into raceday driving – he’s wading in. Today the 17 year old will not only have his first raceday drive but will be involved in all five races at today’s mini meeting at the Manawatu Raceway. All his drives are prepared by his father and high profile trainer Michael House. Michael House has been a dominant force at Manawatu in recent years, especially with champion driver Blair Orange. “Dad’s been amazing, and very supportive,”…
Self Assured ticks all boxes
By Michael Guerin Self Assured ticked almost every box he could in the Flying Stakes at Ashburton on Monday but the IRT New Zealand Cup picture didn’t feel any clearer. Because while his manners, times and most importantly race result were all what his connections would have wanted, it was hardly the domination punters would have been expecting after just 100m. The hot favourite stepped away beautifully (big tick) in the 2400m standing start and was immediately gifted the front by Classie Brigade, putting Pembrook Playboy three back and effectively…
