Need You Now primed for Show Day

By Joshua Smith, Harness News Desk John Dunn nearly pulled off the upset of Cup Day on Tuesday, but it was not to be. The Canterbury reinsman set a solid tempo in the Group One Nevele R Fillies Series Final (1980m) with Need You Now, making life difficult for short-priced favourite Amazing Dream to make ground out wide. Need You Now took a two length advantage over Amazing Dream turning for home, but she was run down late and denied victory by a neck. Trainer Robert Dunn was full of…

Stakes winners keep coming for Belardo

Haunui Farm shuttle stallion Belardo, is among Europe’s leading first season sires and increased his tally of stakes winners to four overnight when his unbeaten son Belloccio took out the Grand Criterium du Languedoc over a mile at Toulouse. Travelling close to the speed throughout, Belloccio quickly responded when asked the question by Olivier Peslier and ran out to a length-and-a-quarter margin at the line. BELARDO’s three other stakes winners are the Group winning fillies Isabella Giles (G2 Rockfel Stakes and G3 Prestige Stakes), Lullaby Moon (G3 Prix Miesque and…

Mature Princess relishing a staying trip

Although Princess Jenni (NZ) (High Chaparral) burst onto the scene winning four of her first six starts, trainer David Brideoake knew even then that she needed time and was a long way from being the finished product. Her last victory in that early sequence came in the 2019 Gr.1 Australasian Oaks at Morphettville but Brideoake suspected she was doing it on pure talent and still had a lot to learn. That learning curve came this year when she went winless until her last-start victory in the Bendigo Cup, which was…

Sky Darci stamps Classic Mile credentials

Sky Darci (NZ) (Darci Brahma) laid out his credentials for a tilt at the HK$12 million Hong Kong Classic Mile with a win over 1200m at Happy Valley on Wednesday. “We’ll go to 1400 metres in December then go for the Four-Year-Old Classic Series,” trainer Caspar Fownes said.  The Darci Brahma gelding mustered early from the gates to hold a midfield position under jockey Joao Moreira, before turning for home and switching back to the inside to pull away in style for a tidy two and three-quarter lengths win.  “He’s…

She was then transferred to Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr’s Caulfield stable where she placed in her Australian debut before two unplaced runs in the Gr.2 Lets Elope Stakes (1400m) and Gr.2 Stocks Stakes (1600m). “She…

Million aim for Guineas winner

Last Saturday’s Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) winner Aegon (NZ) (Sacred Falls) is likely to be aimed at the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie on January 23, but a delay in returning from the South Island could mean the unbeaten three-year-old enters the race without a run.  “There was a delay with the (Cook Strait) crossing and he should be back in Cambridge on Friday sometime,” said Andrew Forsman, who trains the son of Sacred Falls in partnership with Murray Baker. “We probably have run out of…
