Local trainers Rob and Joy Reinke concede they’ve set young sisters Minter Fly and Minter Rise a daunting task in Sunday night’s heats of the Provincial Plate (520m) at Sale. It will take a training masterclass of the highest order for the husband-and-wife team, with Minter Fly and Minter Rise both tackling the Provincial Plate heats first-up after lengthy breaks. Minter Fly, the winner of two from eight, and Minter Rise, which has won two from seven, have been off the scene since August and September respectively. The challenge of…

EXCLUSIVE: Every TAB Melbourne Cup finalist’s best and worst box revealed
Shima Shine is the main TAB Melbourne Cup contender with the most riding on tomorrow’s box draw, according to The Watchdog. Five superstar greyhounds dominate the market following last night’s heats, with the box draw to be conducted on Sunday morning on 7TWO’s popular greyhound racing show ‘Thrill of the Chase’. “I know Shima Shine is an absolute freak and can run ridiculous times but he’s the type of greyhound that needs room to move after boxrise, and there’s a lot of speed in this race,” The Watchdog warned punters…
Elsa to take Meadows lead
Shane Drummond is hoping perennial bridesmaid Elsa Rose can end a frustrating run of second placings and celebrate a breakthrough city victory at The Meadows tonight. Elsa Rose has finished runner-up at her last five starts, the most recent in the Bendigo to The Meadows Final last weekend, her only placing from four starts at the track. The daughter of champion sprinter/sire Fernando Bale has won just four of her 41 starts, but her record could easily read much better, having filled minor placings on 19 occasions. “It’s definitely been…
Vale Ray Keating
Popular Gippsland greyhound racing stalwart Raymond Keating passed away peacefully last Monday in Central Wellington Hospital, aged 75. He had endured a lengthy battle with stomach cancer. A former unit manager at Fulham Prison, Keating was a devoted family man with a passion for greyhound racing. Keating raced Mickie Keato (a finalist in the 2010 G1 National Distance Championship and 2010 G1 Bold Trease Carnival Cup) and Manna Keato (2009 G3 DDC Launching Pad finalist) from the first litter he bred out of Princess Dreams. He also enjoyed success with…

The recent Group 1 TAB Topgun winner has drawn box three in the opening Melbourne Cup heat. “These races are always hard, but we are happy with the draw,” Tom Dailly said. Before the heats, Simon Told Helen was all the rage but a challenging heat and box four has seen him drift to $7 ($2 favourite to win his heat). “Since…

Black Opium retired
Jason Thompson has revealed this morning on RSN that his star greyhound Black Opium has been retired after coming in season. Black Opium, who was joined at the hip by Jason’s wife Seona, was a winner of 29 races from 61 career starts and amassed more then $580,000 in prize money. The daughter of Black Magic Opal and Captivating is destined for great things in the breeding barn, but a decision will be made on the sire of her first litter in the near future by owner and breeders the…
Blaze be Nimble
Aspiring young Allansford trainer Sam Grant never fulfilled his greyhound racing dreams. Sam’s life was tragically cut short when his car and a freight train, on its way to Warrnambool, collided at a railway crossing on March 19, 2013. He was only 22. But the tragic event has never been forgotten by the Warrnambool GRC which will honour the memory of Sam’s short life with the Sam ‘Barbie’ Grant Memorial (450m) on Thursday night. Incidentally, it would have been Sam’s 30th birthday. Warrnambool training stalwart Debbie Goudge, 59, has Nimble…
The “Oddie” couple
Short-course speedster Tough Like Atom ($2.40F) provided young Murchison trainer Stacey Evans, 29, with her first winner – and a huge thrill – at Shepparton on November 9. The 22.13sec victory over 385m was even more sweet given the young mum has spent so much time with the quirky female greyhound, who had unfortunately ‘soured’ midway in her initial preparation. “My partner, Thomas Wark, and I were puzzled as to her fractious behaviour, which she did not present with in the beginning,” said Stacey, pictured above with Thomas and Tough…
