‘Tonk’ v ‘Tommy’ in Hobart Thousand

Young Mount Wallace trainer Correy Grenfell, 26, is hoping champion sprinter Tiggerlong Tonk continues his snowballing run of success in the $75,000 to-the-winner Group 1 Hobart Thousand (461m) on Thursday night. Grenfell won last month’s G3 Shootout (515m) at Sandown with Tiggerlong Tonk in a new race record (29.03sec) prior to him finishing fourth to Hard Style Rico in the G1 Melbourne Cup (515m), also at Sandown. And last Saturday night, he snared a $47,000 first prize courtesy of Yozo Bale in the G2 Ballarat Cup (450m). Dubbed the “ultimate…

Vale Neil Maurer

The greyhound racing world has lost one of its most respected participants in Neil Maurer, who has passed away after a long battle with cancer aged 82. Neil enjoyed enormous success as a breeder and trainer, with his most talented greyhounds including Adrenalize, Adrenalin Burst, Adrenalin Storm and Dazzling Dinney. Based in the Ballarat suburb of Lal Lal, Neil was also a highly respected canine chiropractor, who ran his hands over dogs of the calibre of World Title, Kantarn Bale and Destini Fireball to name just a few. Neil’s daughters…

Tonk’s second crack at the thousand

It could be a big 48 hours for Correy Grenfell who has Tiggerlong Tonk in tonight’s G1 Hobart Thousand heats (461m) and Yozo Bale in the Group 2 Ballarat on Saturday night. A genuine superstar, Tiggerlong Tonk ($1.50F) contests Heat 4 – Race 6 Box 8 – at 9.07pm. Some of the year’s highlights include the re-homing of 2,542 greyhounds and a 25% reduction in euthanasia numbers over the previous year. Victoria’s greyhound racing program expanded to 1,198 race meetings over the year, including new events such as the inaugural SEN National…

Carter’s ‘Special’ Cup Talent

It takes supreme confidence and a little courage to name a greyhound, or any racing animal for that matter, Special Talent and Mick Carter is hoping his judgement will be vindicated in Saturday’s Group 2 Ballarat Cup Final (450m). Kialla-based Carter is a man of few words and certainly isn’t one to get carried away with his greyhounds but he and father Mal had such a lofty opinion of Special Talent they burdened him with the optimistic moniker. “He’s been in the kennels since he was seven months old and…

Tinker Craig rings Ballarat bell

Mathew Tabb’s patient wait for another crack at Group glory will come to a long overdue end when barnstorming heat winner Tinker Craig lines up in Saturday’s Group 2 Ballarat Cup Final (450m). Back in the mid-2000s, Tabb raced star sprinter Superman, a dual Group 1 winner of the Perth Cup and Hobart Thousand as well as the Group 2 Queensland Derby for trainer Emin Aydemir. Tabb’s last appearance in a feature event came in 2012 when Maccaboy was unplaced behind Miata in the Group 1 Bold Tease. “We won…
